Giga and Terra-watt laser interaction with carbon,
tungsten, and beryllium films
EXPLORATORY

Abstract:
The project is aimed to study the behavior of the 0.5 -
10 µm thickness W, C, Be layers in interaction with single or multiple
terawatt laser beam pulses, as well as under the interaction with the laser
beam breakdown plasma produced in gaseous environment, including deuterium.Terawatt
laser system (Tewalas), a modern facility of the NILPRP is a high power,
20-30 x 10 – 15 s pulse duration, 400-450 mJ pulse energy, 10 Hz
repetition rate. The 1014 W/cm2 density power laser beam
will be focalized on the W, C, Be coatings at few micrometers above the
coatings in air/deuterium atmosphere. The laser pulses will be programmed to
have durations of nano or picoseconds, at hundred of Hz or kHz in order to
obtain duration and power densities compared to the fusion plasma
instabilities.
We expect that the
time-resolved visible spectroscopy of plasmas produced by laser breakdown of air
using femtosecond laser pulses (50-450 mJ, 20-30 fs) will reveal features not
observed with longer (nanosecond) laser pulses. Will be studied the effects of
the laser produced plasmas with pure C, W, Be films and their combinations. For
the coatings characterizations before and after exposures will be used modern
techniques as: Atomic force microscopy (AFM), Scanning electron microscopy
(SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, Rutherford
backscattering spectroscopy (RBS), Nuclear reaction analysis (NRA), etc.
The general objectives
of the project are obtaining the scientific experimental and fundamental
results related i) to applications of the C, W and Be materials as first
wall materials of the tokamak type fusion reactors, ii) to the plasma
plume dynamic generated in C, W and Be materials, iii) to the laser-
samples interaction and the desorption plume dynamic, the velocity
distributions of different ablated products.

with the breakdown plasma produced by Tewalas facility in air atmosphere.
Coatings characterization before and after laser beam interaction experiment.
S 3. C, W and Be coatings
interaction with the breakdown plasma produced by Tewalas facility in deuterium
atmosphere. Coatings characterization before and after the experiment.
S4 Composite coatings containing
binary and ternary components interaction with the breakdown plasma produced by
Tewalas facility in air and deuterium atmosphere. Coatings characterization
before and after laser interaction experiment.
